Southwest Philadelphia – 26-year-old Officer Darryl Cathey, who has been with the Philadelphia police department since the last 6 years, is facing DUI charges after he was caught driving a marked police cruiser with flat tires.
The incident happened on Saturday 28 March at around 12:20 a.m. when officer Cathey allegedly pulled up to 12th district headquarters on the 6500 Woodland Avenue. He was driving a marked police vehicle which had three flat tires and bent rims.
A police sergeant on the scene at 12th district allegedly smelled alcohol on officer Cathey’s breath. He also observed that the officer had bloodshot eyes, was very talkative ad didn’t seem to know that the cruiser’s tires were flat.
As the sergeant tried to take officer Cathey into custody, it resulted in a struggle between the officer, the supervisor and other officers. Luckily, no injuries or property damage was reported in the incident.
A look into Officer Cathey’s past record shows that this is not the first time he has run in with the law ever since he was sworn to uphold.
Cathey was accused of assaulting his former girlfriend in 2011 when he was 23 years old. He was also charged with robbery but the robbery charge was dropped by prosecutors because the victim did not show up in court.
Then again in January of 2012, Cathey was fired from his job and was later reinstated in February 2014 by the Fraternal Order of Police.
In the recent incident, officer Cathey faced multiple charges including driving under the influence, simple assault, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering and assaulting the supervisor.
He is currently being suspended for 30 days and may be dismissed from his job.
The incident is being investigated by AID and Internal Affairs.
